Explore the serene landscapes and captivating wildlife along Forest Road 124 near Heber-Overgaard, nestled in the heart of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. This scenic route offers towering ponderosa pines, vibrant wildflowers, and open meadows provide a picturesque backdrop for memorable outdoor experiences. Seasonally wild mushrooms dot the forest floor, adding vibrant color and interest to hikes.


The area bears visible scars from the devastating Rodeo-Chediski Fire of 2002, Arizona’s second-largest wildfire. These scars now mingle with lush regrowth, showcasing nature's remarkable ability to heal. Among the regenerating landscape, visitors can observe new vegetation and the resilience of wildlife that continue to thrive.


One of the highlights of this area is the opportunity to witness wild horses in their natural habitat. Visitors often encounter small herds grazing peacefully, playing together, or cooling off near watering holes. Spot diverse wildlife, including deer, foxes, rabbits, and squirrels. A remarkable wildlife moment we experienced featured a fox being chased by a deer—an unusual sight in the forest—followed by the discovery of the deer's hidden fawn.
